Witkoff to meet Zelensky for latest Ukraine war talks

This weekend, Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s overseas envoy, travels to Berlin for a critical diplomatic mission. The highly anticipated **Witkoff Zelensky meeting** will convene the American mediator, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and key European leaders for crucial **Ukraine peace talks Berlin**. The ambitious goal: to finalize a peace agreement for Ukraine, ideally by Christmas.

Witkoff, leading the White House’s mediation efforts between Ukraine and Russia, will present the newest version of a proposed peace agreement. This visit marks a significant phase in the **Trump envoy Ukraine Russia talks**, which have intensified recently. Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, a major breakthrough in **Ukraine war negotiations 2025** remains elusive, yet the urgency to end the devastating conflict grows daily.

The Wall Street Journal reports that UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are expected among the **European leaders Ukraine talks** will involve. This confirmation follows Ukraine’s submission of its revised 20-point peace plan to the US, underscoring the dynamic nature of these high-stakes discussions.

The intractable issue of eastern Ukrainian territories remains a central obstacle. Kyiv refuses to cede illegally occupied land, while Moscow intends to seize the Donbas region entirely. A controversial element of the **US-led Ukraine peace plan** proposes Ukraine’s army withdraw from the region, creating a “special economic zone.” President Zelensky has voiced strong skepticism, questioning its efficacy in preventing further Russian advances. “What will restrain [Russia] from advancing? Or from infiltrating disguised as civilians?” he asked, highlighting the profound lack of trust.

Despite hurdles, Ukraine and its European allies commend the US-led discussions, acknowledging progress in refining a plan initially perceived as Russia-leaning. However, friction persists. President Trump, in a recent Politico interview, criticized European leaders as “weak” and renewed calls for Ukrainian elections—a notion Zelensky conditionally embraced if security could be guaranteed within 90 days. Elections have been suspended since martial law was declared in February 2022.

Beyond negotiations, focus remains on Ukraine’s long-term stability through security guarantees and financial aid. Facing a severe shortfall, Ukraine needs an additional €135.7 billion. In a major development, EU governments agreed to indefinitely freeze approximately €210 billion in Russian assets held in Europe. This measure, condemned by the Kremlin, aims to facilitate loans to Ukraine for its military and reconstruction, though legal complexities for repurposing these assets are still under negotiation.

Adding to the diplomatic landscape are reports of Ukraine’s potential rapid accession to the European Union. The Financial Times noted Brussels’ support for Ukraine’s swift entry, a proposal included in Kyiv’s latest draft to Washington. Ukraine, which applied to join the EU after the 2022 invasion, could potentially become a member as early as January 2027, though Washington’s full approval of this timeline is uncertain.

The upcoming **Witkoff Zelensky meeting** in Berlin signifies a critical juncture. It underscores the intense diplomatic push to end the conflict and secure a stable future for Ukraine amidst complex territorial, political, and financial challenges. The path ahead is difficult, but ongoing efforts reflect a shared global commitment to peace.
